Chemicals in Fabric Softeners & Dryer Sheets

Here is a list of just some of the chemicals found in fabric softeners and dryer sheets:

  • Benzyl acetate: Linked to pancreatic cancer
  • Benzyl Alcohol: Upper respiratory tract irritant
  • Ethanol: On the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Hazardous Waste list and can cause central nervous system disorders
  • Limonene: Known carcinogen
  • A-Terpineol: Can cause respiratory problems, including fatal edema, and central nervous system damage
  • Ethyl Acetate: A narcotic on the EPA's Hazardous Waste list
  • Camphor: Causes central nervous system disorders
  • Chloroform: Neurotoxic, anesthetic and carcinogenic
  • Linalool: A narcotic that causes central nervous system disorders
  • Pentane: A chemical known to be harmful if inhaled


Studies have found a direct link between exposure to the petroleum-based chemicals used in conventional fabric softeners and dryer sheets and the development of cancer, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Conventionally manufactured dryers sheets with intoxicating scents and an irresistible feel, but they a noxious cocktail of volatile organic compounds that are linked to cancer, endocrine and reproductive issues.

Tea tree oil is noted for its anti-microbial properties, fighting bacteria, inhibiting the growth of fungi, and potentially wiping out certain viruses. Research has determined that it derives its benefits from terpene hydrocarbons. While there are numerous terpenes (approximately 100) that make up tea tree oil, terpinen-4-ol is largely responsible for its antibacterial properties. A standard for TTO is maintained that requires all commercially available oil to have a minimum amount of terpinen-4-ol, with no upper limit, to maximize its broad spectrum antimicrobial activity.

Grapefruit essential oil will work synergistically with the vinegar to kill the bacteria and germs found in laundry, as well your clothing with a subtle yet pleasant scent you clothes will have a wonderful fresh smell, this mixture will combat static cling, and preserve the intensity of clothing pigments.
