What to Say when Smudging
Some people believe that you need to say a prayer when smudging, I do believe that prayer can take many forms, It can be words from a religious book like psalms or an affirmation of intentions. So pick one that resonates with you and say an affirmation to your higher power out loud:
A smudge kit contains herbs, a
"bowl" or shell, and a feather to direct the smoke. The entire kit
can be carried in a medicine bag.
Each part of the smudge kit and the smudging process signifies one of the four elements, that, when used, evokes the fifth element, life energy.
- The shell represents WATER
- The unlit herbs and ashes represents the EARTH
- The lit herb represents the FIRE
- The smoke represents the AIR
Before you begin, be sure the area is well ventilated because the smoke, carrying the negative energy, must have an escape route.
Take normal precautions to prevent an unwanted fire, such as placing your smudge pot or shell on a non-combustible surface.
Gather your smudge kit and a means to light the herbs. Long wooden matches are the best because a candle can add dripping wax to the process and a lighter, is well, kind of out of character.
Light the herb and when a flame appears, put the herb out so it will smolder and smoke. Before you smudge another person, an object or a place, you should smudge yourself. You can do this by bringing the smoke to you and rolling it in swirls over your head, shoulders and around your body. Send the smoke away with the feather.
When smudging a place, such as a
room or car, pay homage to the cardinal directions which include the east,
west, north, south, up and down.
What to Say when Smudging
Some people believe that you need to say a prayer when smudging, I do not disagree, but I do believe that prayer can take many forms, it can be words from a religious book like psalms or an affirmation of intentions. So pick one that resonates with you and say an affirmation to your higher power out loud: Example: “I invoke the Light of God to be with me and assist me in being the perfect channel of Love and Light.”
Light the sage, then blow out the flame so the smudge stick is smoking, placing it into the dish. I start in the farthest room from the front door. Enter the room and go to the farthest corner to begin. Fan the smoke against the walls while saying an affirmation. There are no wrong prayers or affirmations and depending on the circumstance I have used the following:
“Only love and light in this house”
"Only energy that is pure love and light and for the highest good in this space."
"This is a house filled with love and light, all negative energy is not welcome here.”
“Thank you spirits for your divine presence as I clear the space for our connection.”
"God, bless this house."
"Only the love of Jesus fill this room."
“I cleanse this house in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”
"Jesus, bless this home and rid it of anything that is not of your love."
Move clockwise in the room,
fanning the smoke and continue smudging; outlining the walls, corners, ceilings
each door and window frame, from bottom left, to top left, across from top left
to right then top right to bottom right. Remember to smudge inside the closets.
After the entire outside of the room is smudged, complete the room by going to
the center of the room then smudge the door to enter, both inside and outside
the room. Then smudge the hallway and move to the next room, until the entire
house has been smudged.
Note: Remember to continue saying your affirmation during the smudging process.

Whole leaf sage incense for smudging. American Indians consider this type of sage to be the king of all sages, and use it in smudging ceremonies. It is said that smudging sage removes negative energy from a person, clears the mind, and relaxes the body.
